Accidental deaths & Suicides in India Report 2016, National Crime records Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has recorded a total number of 1,13,961 Fire-related accidental deaths between 2010 and 2014- an average of 62 deaths per day. A detailed analysis of these deaths also indicates that only 1.42% of deaths took place in a Factory Settings while the majority- a whopping 29% of deaths, took place in Residential Buildings. The alarming data also points fingers at the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, which accounted for 54% of these fatalities. Mumbai alone has faced a 25-30% dip in business and footfalls due to the Kamala Mills Fire Incident, that killed 14 people.
The recent fire incidents in different parts of India have well exposed and established the fact that India is dealing with a Fire- Safety crisis. It is necessary that Fire safety apparatuses are well-inspected, well-maintained and well documented. Besides, the NBC 2016 needs to be upgraded as per the contemporary situation, and Building Safety demands and should be made compulsory via converting this into law, with its application being mandatory.
In India, where densely populated areas show uncontrollable vertical growth- do we not need to mandate the application of the NBC 2016 Guidelines, especially for High Rise Structures situated in Densely Populated Areas? Should it not be mandatory for Factories, Residential Structures and Commercial Buildings to be well equipped with every possible measure to #BeatTheFire?
We believe that, together, we can #BeatTheFire. By reviving proper Fire Safety Measures and implementing them, we would be able to take exemplary steps. Apart from that, spreading Fire Safety related awareness would work like a charm to eradicate Fire Related disasters. Come, sign this petition towards a safer future. Lets #BeatTheFire!
